VM 105 EC Art Visual Arts Scavenger Hunt Project Presentation

VM 105 EC Art Visual Arts Scavenger Hunt Project Presentation

Description

For each question, find a work of art in the Museum of Fine Arts (Links to an external site.) and use it to make your answer. Two questions ask you to look for architecture near Downtown Boston.

Take a picture of the work of art.

Pictures taken with a cell phone are fine, they do not need to be perfect. However, your pictures should be clear enough that they support your argument.

Then, put your picture in this templateActions and write a short (3-4 sentences) explanation of why the work you chose is a good illustration of it.

Works of art should come from a variety of times, cultures, and places. No two terms should use the same culture or place—you should draw your examples from all over the museum.

You can use PowerPoint to annotate the image, and Adobe Creative Cloud (Links to an external site.) is available to all Emerson students if you want to get more sophisticated.

Place your items in the document in the order they are given in this list. Note that you cannot choose any work that is used in the Pamela Gordon, Art Matters textbook.

  • Choose a work of ancient Greek art or a work of Roman art. Based in what you read in the textbook and we discussed in class, how is the work of art you’ve chosen typical of that culture?
  • Choose a work of Romanesque or Gothic art. State which style the work of art you have chosen is, and explain why it is typical of that style, based on the textbook and class.
  • Choose a work of traditional African art that is not connected to Islam. Explain what characteristics of traditional African art that are listed in the textbook your work of art exhibits.

Choose a work of Islamic art. How does it exhibit the common themes of Islamic art that your textbook lists?

Choose a work of Pacific art that is linked to the ancestors of its culture. Explain how the work of art makes this connection. Think about how materials and techniques can be a part of making an ancestral connection. Consult the museum label and the museum’s online database for contextual information. If a piece doesn’t have enough information, choose another one.

Choose a work of Maya or Aztec art. Explain how the work of art is typical of art from those cultures based in your readings, videos, and class.

Choose a work of Inca, Paracas, or Nasca art. Explain how it expresses one or more of the characteristics of ancient South American art as listed in your textbook.

Choose a work of Native North American art and explain its cultural context, using the museum label and the museum’s online database for contextual information. If a piece doesn’t have enough information, choose another one.

Choose a work representing the Buddha. Explain how it is characteristic of Buddhist art in general, and how it is typical of the style of the culture that produced it, based in the readings, videos, and class.

  • Choose a work of art from China, Japan, or India that is not Buddhist. Explain how it is connected to other themes or characteristics of that culture’s art as given in your textbook.
  • Choose a religious work of Baroque art that comes from a Catholic country. Explain how it fulfills the intentions of Catholic Counterreformation art during this time period, based in the readings and class.

Choose a work of Dutch Baroque art. Explain how it is typical of this style and culture, based in the readings and class.

Choose a Rococo OR Neoclassical work of art. Indicate which style you have chosen. Explain how the work is characteristic of this style, based in the textbook and what we discussed in class.

Choose an Expressionist work of art. Explain why it fits into this category of art, based in what you have read and what we talked about in class.

Find a Cubist work of art. Explain whether it is Analytic or Synthetic, and how it exhibits the principles of Cubist art as listed in the textbook.

Choose a work of Minimalist or Pop Art. Explain how your work of art is typical of this art style, based in your readings and from class.

Choose a work of art made in the 20th or 21st century that addresses issues of gender or race. Explain how the work addresses those issues. What style of art does this work of art belong to, and why?

  1. Choose a work of art that addresses the global connectedness of our world. Explain how the work addresses those issues. What style of art does this work of art belong to, and why?
  2. Find a building in either Bauhaus or International Style from buildings around where you live, work, or go to school. Take a picture of your example and label it with the building location. Explain how it fits the style you have chosen.
  3. Find an example of a Doric column, an Ionic column, and a Corinthian column from buildings around where you live, work, or go to school. Take a picture of each example and label it with the building location and the type of column it is an example of.
  4. It has been brought to my attention that the MFA has closed some galleries that contain the art needed to answer questions 6-8 of the scavenger hunt. If you have not already answered these, you can use the MFA database (Links to an external site.) or the Met database (Links to an external site.) to answer these. You can ONLY use these for questions 6-8. Everything else must be done at the MFA in person.
