Domestic Violence

In this discussion, we’re going to take a look at issues associated with reporting known or suspected cases of child abuse.

According to the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family, “Surveys of health care professionals, including mental health providers, indicate that professionals often fail to report identified child maltreatment, despite being trained to identify child abuse and neglect. Many professionals indicate that they do not believe others will follow through to provide the help needed by a family coping with violence.” (APA, 1996, p. 63)

For the purposes of this discussion, choose a state that you are interested in and respond to all of the following questions and at least 2 of your classmates’ posts.

6. Do you think there is ever a good reason for a professional to fail to report child abuse?

Disability Study

What is Sensory Disability?

A sensory disability is a condition that affects one or more senses, such as sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, or spatial and awareness. Sight and deafness are common sensory disabilities as well as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) involving one or more senses. Often a sensory disability is referred to as a sensory impairment or a sensory sensitivity. A person does not have to have a full loss of a sense to be sensory impaired, and a person may have two or more sensory impairments at the same time.

Many people diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders have sensory sensitivities, which can mean difficulties in processing everyday sensory information such as sounds, lights, sights, and smells. Any of the senses may be over-or-under sensitive, or both, at different times. These sensory differences can affect behavior and can have a profound effect on a person’s life.

A Dual Sensory Impairment (DSI) is the combination of both hearing and sight impairment, but this does not necessarily mean a total loss of both senses. Most people with a dual sensory impairment such as ASD and blindness or ASD and deafness do have some level of vision and or hearing. In some cases, dual sensory impairments may not include ASD and are referred to as being deaf-blind when the impairment causes difficulties with communication and hearing. The combination of the two sensory impairments intensifies the impact of each other. Meeting the needs of people who are deaf-blind often requires a specialized approach and individualized communication methods such as tactile sign language.
